Ultra-low power wireless sensor network for metering applications
(FP7-SME-1-2007-222322)
In 2007, Lowri Beck Systems Limited joined a consortium of a select number of EU member states to form a framework. The group project, funded by the EU, began to develop a ultra-low power wireless sensor device. The creation of this device would allow linked devices to create a mesh netowrk on metering applications.
There is a significant and timely need to provide gas and water utility companies with a cost-efficient, wireless, AMR technology, providing distance reading methods to increase company’s competiveness and profit margins.
The technology chosen is Wireless MBUS (WMBUS) standard which is a multi-hop topology compliant with the EN-13757 standard. The WMBUS standard specifies communications between water, gas, heat, and electric meters and is becoming widely accepted in Europe for smart metering or Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) applications. WMBUS is targeted to operate in the 868 MHz band. This band gives a good trade off between RF range and antenna size.
